The newly opened Devlin Course at St Andrews Bay provides a real challenge for the low or high handicapper alike.
The course is an accomplishment of the prolific Australian designer and pro, Bruce Devlin, who also worked with Sarazen. The course takes full advantage of the unique cliff-top locale, developing a mind-game and true test of nerves for even those experienced in this type of Russian Roulette golf.
Many of the greens are located on the very edge of the cliff, creating a visual impression of being suspended in mid-air. Approach shots are made with only the sea and horizon in view, making club selection and accuracy difficult but the essential key to a good round. The fear of overshooting the green and losing your ball to the sea below becomes a major fear factor.
Beautifully sculpted, undulating greens crown each hole with the ever-rolling fairways, generously peppered with traditional pot-bunkers and constant changes in elevation, just adding to the very stern examination of skills Devlin has created. Intimidating? Yes, but also stimulating. The Devlin Course is something quite unique in these parts and with the ever-present eye of St. Andrews over your shoulder the experience is memorable and quite special.
