Perhaps the most remote Championship links in the world, The Machrie Golf Links on the western island of Islay (pronounced I-Lah) makes for a pleasant surprise.
It is an excellent test of traditional, Scottish links golf, with firm, fast running fairways and wonderfully undulating greens. The use of the natural terrain around the greens and approaches means landing your ball in the right spot, and more often than not, a low running shot is required to play to the greens. There are some blind shots, both off the tee and to greens, and this makes for a roller coaster experience.
The hotel is comfortable and there are two bars in which to share stories after a round. There are over thirty Islay Malt Whiskys to sample, or Whisky distillery tours are available and are close by. The restaurant is among the best on the island.
An ideal short trip can combine the Machrie Golf links and Machrihanish Golf Club on the Mull of Kintyre. Flights are available from near the Machrie and Machrihanish to Glasgow making a nice triangular journey taking in two outstanding links.
The Machrie will not disappoint. If you are looking for a high quality golfing experience to tell to your friends about for years to come, the Machrie is for you.
